Devils WIN 4-2, Advance to Cup Finals!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday, May 22, 2001, (game 5) at home 4-2.   This win knocked the Penguins out of the playoffs and advances the Devils to the Stanley Cup Finals to face the Colorado Avalanche.   The win gave the team the Prince of Wales Trophy (for winning the East).
Jason Arnott started the Devils off with an early lead, just 57 seconds into the game, by beating Hedberg with a nice slap shot.   Brian Rafalski got an assist on the goal.   It took the Penguins nearly 16 minutes to get their first shot on goal.   Alexei Morozov scored about 40 seconds after that first shot, at 16:38 to tie the game.
At the end of one period, the game was tied 1-1.   The Devils outshot the Penguins 6-3 in the period.
7:41 into the second period, Jason Arnott got his second goal of the game on the power-play.   The goal was another nice slap shot with assists from Patrick Elias and Petr Sykora.   Bobby Holik put a slap shot passed Hedberg at 12:23 to make the score 3-1.   Jay Pandolfo and Scott Stevens got assists on the Holik goal.   Martin Brodeur stopped a shot from Martin Straka, but unfortunately Straka beat Marty with his own rebound at 13:09 on the power-play.
After two periods, the Devils led by a score of 3-2.   The Devils outshot the Penguins in period 2, 10-9.
John Madden capped off the scoring at 3:32 in the third to give the Devils a 4-2 lead.   Maddens goal was a nice wrist shot, with assists from Turner Stevenson and Jay Pandolfo.
With one minute left in the game, a frustrated Mario Lemieux went after John Madden, again.   "Super" Mario took a cross checking penalty for his actions, negating the Penguins man advantage (they had pulled goaltender Johan Hedberg for the extra skater).
The Devils won the game 4-2, and won the series, 4 games to 1.
Brian Rafalski increased his league-leading (for defenseman) points to 15.
Martin Brodeur had shutout the Penguins for 151 minutes, 19 seconds, before Morozov scored in the first period.
Patrick Elias now has a 10 game point streak going - the best in the league for these playoffs.   Petr Sykora is second with a 9 game point streak.
    Bring on the Avs.
