June 04, 2001 Devils WIN 4-1! 1 Away from Cup!
The New Jersey Devils defeated the the Colorado Avalanche
by a score of 4-1 on Monday, June 4, 2001 in Denver. with this
win, the Devils now lead the Stanley Cup Finals series 3-2, and will
have the opportunity to win the Stanley Cup at home on Thursday, June
7, 2001.
Patrik Elias scored with a nice wrist shot at 3:09 in the
first period to give the Devils the early lead in the game. Petr
Sykora and Brian Rafalski got assists on the goal.
One of the most anti-NJ referees in the league, Kerry Fraser
was one of the two refs on the ice. He was able to make a bogus call
against NJ early in the game. Bobby Holik took a tripping minor
penalty at 8:56 (called by Fraser). The Avalanche was able to
capitalize on the man advatage at 10:09. Alex Tanguay beat Brodeur
on that power-play with a slap shot.
At 18:47, Alexander Mogilny broke out of his scoring slump
(14 games) by beating Patrick Roy with a nice wrist shot. Scott
Gomez and Brian Rafalski got assists on the goal.
After one period, the Devils led 2-1. The shots on
goal on the game were even after one period, with six shots apiece.
Sergei Brylin scored with a nice deflection of a shot from
Alexander Mogilny on the power-play at 4:39 in the second.
Alexander Mogilny and Scott Niedermayer got assists on Brylins' goal.
After two periods, the Devils led 3-1. The Devils
also outshot the Avalanche 10-9 in the period.
John Madden scored with a bankhand shot at 18:05 in the
third period to seal the win for the Devils. Turner Stevenson and
Sergei Brylin got assists on the goal.
The Devils finished the game with a 4-1 win, as well as
outshooting the Avalanche 26-23.
Patrik Elias set a new team playoffs record for points,
with 22 (9 goals and 13 assists).
Jim McKenzie filled the hole in the lineup due to Jason
Arnott being out of the game. Sean O'Donnell was scratched in
favor of Ken Sutton, who played very well in the few games he filled in
earlier in the playoffs.
With both regular season alternate captains (Randy McKay
and Jason Arnott) out of the lineup with injuries, Bobby Holik continued
his role as a temporary alternate, and Scott Niedermayer wore an "A"
last night in place of Jason Arnott.
