One of the most anti-NJ referees in the league, Kerry Fraser was one of the two refs on the ice.   He was able to make a bogus call against NJ early in the game.   Bobby Holik took a tripping minor penalty at 8:56 (called by Fraser).   The Avalanche was able to capitalize on the man advatage at 10:09.   Alex Tanguay beat Brodeur on that power-play with a slap shot.

After one period, the Devils led 2-1.   The shots on goal on the game were even after one period, with six shots apiece.
Sergei Brylin scored with a nice deflection of a shot from Alexander Mogilny on the power-play at 4:39 in the second.   Alexander Mogilny and Scott Niedermayer got assists on Brylins' goal.
After two periods, the Devils led 3-1.   The Devils also outshot the Avalanche 10-9 in the period.
John Madden scored with a bankhand shot at 18:05 in the third period to seal the win for the Devils.   Turner Stevenson and Sergei Brylin got assists on the goal.
The Devils finished the game with a 4-1 win, as well as outshooting the Avalanche 26-23.
Patrik Elias set a new team playoffs record for points, with 22 (9 goals and 13 assists).
Jim McKenzie filled the hole in the lineup due to Jason Arnott being out of the game.   Sean O'Donnell was scratched in favor of Ken Sutton, who played very well in the few games he filled in earlier in the playoffs.
With both regular season alternate captains (Randy McKay and Jason Arnott) out of the lineup with injuries, Bobby Holik continued his role as a temporary alternate, and Scott Niedermayer wore an "A" last night in place of Jason Arnott.
