December 14, 2001 Bad Officials: Devils Lose to Panthers 3-2
The New Jersey Devils lost 3-2 at home to the Florida
Panthers, Friday, December 14, 2001. Not enough offense nor
enough good defense were problems for the Devils, however, the loss
cannot be blamed soley on them. The officiating for this game
was terrible.
Jason Arnott was called on a bogus holding call at 14:10
of the first period, just 8 seconds after the penalty expired, Niklas
Hagman put the puck over JF Damphousse and into the net. The
goal gave Florida a 1-0 lead.
The first period ended with the Panthers leading 1-0.
The shots were even, 9-9 in the period.
Marcus Nilson scored on the power-play at 11:49 of the
second period to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
The second period ended with Florida leading 2-0.
The shots on goal were even again (7-7) in the second.
Ivan Novoseltsev beat Damphousse at 2:04 of the third
period to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
Scott Gomez got the Devils on the board at 7:40 of the
third to cut the Panthers lead to 3-1. Petr Sykora and Jason
Arnott got assists on Gomez's third goal of the season.
Patrik Elias scored a power-play goal at 11:29 to bring
the Devils within one goal of the Panthers. Bobby Holik and
Brian Rafalski got assists on Elias's 15th goal of the season.
The game ended with the Panthers winning, 3-2.
The Devils outshot the Panthers 12-6 in the third period.
Andreas Salomonsson, Andrei Zyuzin, and Pierre Dagenais
were scratches for the Devils. Martin Brodeur was rested this
game, but will play in Ottawa Saturday.
