December 20, 2001Devils & Oilers Tie, 3-3
The New Jersey Devils tied the Edmonton Oilers, 3-3, at
home on Thursday, December 20, 2001.
Josh Green tipped the puck past Marty Brodeur at 4:33 of
the first period to give the Oilers an early 1-0 lead.
The first period ended with the Oilers leading 1-0, even
though the Devils held them to just two shots in the period.
Bobby Holik beat Salo at 12:05 of the second period, on
the power-play to tie the game, 1-1. Brian Rafalski got the only
assist on Holik's 11th goal of the season.
Randy McKay scored a questionable goal at 16:24, it seemed
to be directed in the net by Randy's arm, but was reviewed and did count.
After further replays on TV, it was apparent that the puck first
went off McKay's arm, but then deflected into the net off his stick.
Scott Stevens and Scott Niedermayer got assists on McKay's second goal
of the season, that gave the Devils a 2-1 lead.
The second period ended with the Devils leading 2-1, and
outshooting them 20-8 in the game.
Ethan Moreau put the puck past Brodeur with a nice deflection
at 6:09 of the third period to tie the game, 2-2.
Randy McKay got a nice rebound and put the puck past Salo
at 15:14 on a 5 minute major power-play. Patrik Elias and Scott
Gomez got assists on McKay's second goal of the night.
Mike Comrie tied the game at 18:24 with an unassisted goal.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 3-3. The
Devils outshot the Oilers 12-6 in the third period.
The overtime period ended with no scoring, so the Devils
ended their second game in a row in a tie. Each team had 1 shot on
goal in the 5 minute overtime period. The Devils outshot the Oilers
33-15 in the game.
Ken Daneyko missed the game (still on Injired Reserve).
Jay Pandolfo missed the game after sustaining a Rib injury in Wednesday
night against the Rangers. Tommy Albelin and Jason Arnott (sick)
were scratches for the Devils.
