The New Jersey Devils defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2
at home on Friday, March 1, 2002.
Scott Gomez got the Devils on the board at 3:29 of the
first period to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead. Gomez's 8th
goal of the season was assisted by Brian Rafalski.
Petr Sykora beat Corey Schwab at 4:50 of the second period
on the Devils second shot of the game. Jason Arnott and Patrik
Elias got assists on Sykora's 16th goal of the season.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 3-0 lead at 17:15 of the
first period by beating Schwab, shorthanded. His 22nd goal of
the season was unassisted.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Maple
Leafs 3-0 on the scoreboard and 7-5 in shots.
Jason Arnott gave the Devils a 4-0 lead at 9:33 of the
second period. Assists were given to Petr Sykora and Patrik Elias
on Arnott's 22nd goal of the season.
Bryan McCabe ruined Brodeur's shutout at 16:29 of the
second period, cutting the Devils lead to 4-1.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Leafs,
4-1. Toronto outshot New Jersey 12-10 in the period.
Gary Valk scored for the Maple Leafs at 14:05 of the third
period. The goal got the Leafs within two of the Devils, but they
took two penalties in the 5:55 remaining after that goal eliminating their
chances to catch the Devils.
The game ended with the Devils victorious, 4 goals to 2.
The Devils outshot the Leafs 26-20 in the game.
