March 16, 2002 Devils Beat Rangers 3-1
The New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Rangers, 3-1
at home on Saturday, March 16, 2002. The win gave the Devils their
first three-game winning streak since early November. The Devils
are now 4 points ahead of the Rangers and just two points behind the
Islanders.
Petr Sykora got the Devils on the board early at 1:14 of
the first period, on the power-play. Sykora's 17th goal of the
season was assisted by Patrik Elias and Jim McKenzie.
Mathew Barnaby started a fight at 1:35, with Ken Daneyko
who was happy to oblige, but the battle didn't amount to much and there
was no real victor.
Sandy McCarthy evened the scored at 3:01 of the first period
on the power-play.
The Devils had a 1:53 5-3 power-play at 8:33 but there poor
play did not result in any good scoring chances.
The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1. The
shots were also even at 12 apiece. There were 26 penalty minutes
assessed in the period, 13 each.
Petr Sykora got his second goal of the game at 4:12 of the
second period to give the Devils a 2-1 lead. Sykora's 18th of the
season was assisted by Valeri Kamensky and Patrik Elias.
Randy McKay scored a power-play goal at 14:53 of the second
period to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. Brian Rafalski and Patrik
Elias got assists on McKay's 6th goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Rangers
by a score of 3-1. Devils outshot the Rangers 11-7 in the period.
Martin Brodeur was excellent in the third period and in the
game. There was no scoring in the third period. The Rangers
outshot the Devils 6-3 in the period, but were outshot 26-25 in the game.
Patrik Elias had assists on all three Devils' goals.
