The New Jersey Devils defeated the Hurricanes, 3-2 in Raleigh,
N.C. on Wednesday, April 3, 2002.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 12:33 of the first
period on the power-play by flipping the puck over Arturs Irbe. Petr
Sykora and Joe Nieuwendyk got assists on Elias's 28th goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Hurricanes
1-0. The Devils outshot the Canes 12-6 in the period.
Jeff O'Neill beat Martin Brodeur at 10:35 of the second period
on the power-play to tie the game, 1-1.
Jaroslav Svoboda put the puck past Martin Brodeur at 14:19 of
the second period to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead.
Some nice work by Gionta and a bad move by Irbe led to Sergei
Brylin scoring a goal to tie the game, 2-2. Irbe left the net to play
a puck dumped in behind the net. Gionta beat him to the puck and
nicely centered it. Brylin took the rebound from XXX's shot
and put it past Irbe (just getting back into net) with 24 seconds left in
The second period ended with the game tied, 2-2. The
Hurricanes outshot the Devils 13-9 in the period.
Jamie Langenbrunner put the puck over Irbe and into the net
at 3:45 of the third period to give the Devils a 3-2 lead.
Langenbrunner's 13th goal of the season was assisted by Patrik Elias.
The game ended with the Devils defeating the Hurricanes, 3-2.
The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 27-26 in the game, though lost 61%
of the faceoffs.
Colin White has a stiff neck and sat out this game, but is
expected to play against Atlanta on Friday. Mike Commodore, Jim
McKenzie, and Andreas Salomonsson were healthy scratches for the Devils.
