Hurricanes defeat Depleted Devils, 2-1
The New Jersey Devils were defeated by the Hurricanes in Raleigh, North Carolina, 2-1 on Wednesday, April 17, 2002.
Christian Berglund had a nice breakaway just 3:27 into the first period, but was unable to put the puck past Arturs Irbe.
Berglund took a stupid holding the stick penalty at 6:53 of the first period.   Rod Brind'Amour scored on that power-play at 8:21 to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.
Erik Cole increased the Canes lead to 2-0 just 1:22 later, at 9:43.   Cole's shot was accidentally redirected by Tommy Albelin past Martin Brodeur.
The first period ended with the Hurricanes leading the Devils, 2-0.   The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 14-6, but won only 5 of 17 faceoffs in the period.
The second period ended with the Hurricanes still leading the Devils, 2-0.   The Devils outshot the Hurricanes, 12-3 and won 9 of 22 faceoffs in the period.
Patrik Elias got the Devils on the board at 7:31 of the third period on the power-play to cut the Hurricanes lead to 2-1.   Elias's 1st goal of the playoffs was assisted by Brian Rafalski and Scott Niedermayer.
The Devils pulled Brodeur with 1:13 left in regulation, but could not manage to beat Irbe before the clock ran down.
The game ended with the Hurricanes defeating the Devils by a score of 2-1.   The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 9-8 in the third period and 35-17 in the game, but only won 35% of the faceoffs without Nieuwendyk in the lineup.   The Hurricanes out-hit the Devils 47-43 in the game.
Mike Commodore and Andrei Zyuzin were healthy scratches for the Devils.   Scott Gomez(hand), Petr Sykora(ankle), Stephane Richer(foot), and Joe Nieuwendyk(stmoach virus) were also scratches.
The attendance at the game was 3,329 less than the arena's capacity - and 108 less than their season average.
