October 19, 2002 Game 4: Devils Lose 1-3 to Hurricanes
The New Jersey Devils were defeated 3-1 by the Carolina
Hurricanes in Raleigh on Saturday, October 19, 2002. The loss
was the first of the season for the Devils, ending a three game winning
streak.
Rod Brind'Amour beat Brodeur with a short-handed goal at
5:46 of the first period. Brind'Amour surprised Brodeur, deflecting
a shot from Kevyn Adams in front of the net.
The first period ended with the Hurricanes leading the Devils
1-0. The shots were even at 7 apiece in the period.
The Devils dominated the Hurricanes in the second period, but
there were no goals scored. The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 12-4
in the period.
Jeff O'Neill beat Brodeur at 10:40 of the third period,
to give the Canes a 2-0 lead.
Scott Gomez took a roughing penalty at 11:16, but argued
with the officials and took a second minor as well as a few misconducts
(getting ejected from the game).
Ron Francis scored at 12:19 on the power-play (2 man
advantage) to give the Canes a 3-0 lead.
Bad officiating, including the inconsistant calling of minor
infractions, led to numerous problems in the third period. In an
unbelievable display of stupidity, the off-ice officials would not release
a Devil player from the penalty box, even though a penalty had expired.
Jim McKenzie should have been allowed to join the Devils penalty
killers on the ice, but was not permitted to. The "mistake" gave
the Hurricanes extra time on a 5-3 power-play - causing John Madden to go
berserk, smashing his stick on the ice in frustration.
Scott Stevens was involved in a few battles with Bates
Battaglia, throwing (and landing) a few good punches -- but, the only
"real" fight of the game came at 17:15 of the third, between Jim McKenzie
and Darren Langdon. Big "Mac" landed a number of solid punches early
on, with Langdon just trying to hold on. Langdon did get a few in
towards the end of the fight, but McKenzie was the clear victor in the
battle.
Brian Gionta ruined Kevin Weekes shutout with just 53 second
left in the game, on the power-play. His first goal of the season was
assisted by Joe Nieuwendyk and Andrei Zyuzin.
The game ended with the Hurricanes winning, 3-1. The
Hurricanes outshot the Devils 9-8 in the third, but were outshot 27-20 in
the game.
The Hurricanes won 60% of the faceoffs in the game. Both
teams converted on 1 of 7 power-play opportunities.
Scott Gomez led all players with 24 penalty minutes.
There were a total of 92 penalty minutes assessed in the game.
Andrei Zyuzin was in the lineup for Ken Daneyko and Stephen
Guolla was in for Mike Danton.
