November 15, 2002 Game 14: Devils Crush Canadiens, 5-1
The Devils defeated the Montreal Canadiens at home on
Friday, November 15, 2002. The Devils will face the Habs again
on Saturday, November 16, 2002 in Montreal.
Jamie Langenbrunner gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 2:54 of
first period on a 5 on 3 power-play. Langenbrunner's sixth goal of
the season was assisted by Brian Rafalski and Patrik Elias.
Saku Koivu tied the game at 11:13, blasting a shot past
Brodeur.
Jamie Langenbrunner got his second goal of the period,
shorthanded, at 14:11 to give the Devils a 2-1 lead. John Madden
got the only assist on Langenbrunner's seventh goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Habs,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Canadiens 18-6 in the period.
Brian Gionta gave the Devils a 3-1 lead at 3:52 of the
second period, on the power-play. Patrik Elias and Brian Rafalski
assisted on Gionta's second goal of the season.
Sergei Brylin deflected a hard shot from John Madden past
Hackett at 11:54 of the second to give the Devils a 4-1 lead. Scott
Niedermayer also assisted on Brylin's fourth goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Canadiens
4-1. The Devils outshot the Habs 16-4 in the period.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils their third power-play goal of
the game with 2:01 remaining in the third period. Elias's fifth goal
of the season was assisted by Jamie Langenbrunner and Scott Niedermayer.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 5-1. The
Devils outshot the Habs 10-9 in the third, and 44-21 in the game.
The game was the first in a "home and home" series, with the
second game to be played on Saturday at 7:00PM in Montreal.
The Devils now lead the lifetime series, 35-27-7-1 and are
22-10-3-0 at home. Last season, the teams tied the season series,
2-2.
The game was also the first for Randy McKay at the
Continental Airlines Arena, since he was traded to Dallas last season.
He signed with Montreal as a free agent this summer.
Martin Brodeur is expected to start in net again on
Saturday. Jeff Hackett was in goal for the Habs Friday, with Jose
Theodore expected in net on Saturday.
Scott Niedermayer got his 300th career assist on Brylin's
goal.
The Devils got three power-play goals on six chances,
improving to 8 for 68 (11.8%).
Jay Pandolfo was put on the Injured Reserve list on
Thursday, November 14 - retroactive to November 8, 2002. Tommy
Albelin and Stephen Guolla were scratches for the Devils.
