November 21, 2002 Game 17: Devils & Rangers Tie, 4-4
The New Jersey Devils skated to a 4-4 tie against the New
York Rangers at the Continental Airlines Arena on Thursday, November 21,
2002.
Brian Gionta got the Devils on the board early, putting the
puck past Dan Blackburn at 4:06 of the first period. Gionta's third
goal of the season was assisted by Patrik Elias and Scott Niedermayer.
Mike Danton fought Matthew Barnaby at 5:15 of the first
period. The fight was pretty even, with a slight edge to Danton.
Tom Poti tied the game, beating Brodeur at 7:55.
The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1. The
Devils outshot the Rangers 12-3 in the period.
Petr Nedved gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 7:43 of the second
period with a shot that Brodeur should have had.
Patrik Elias tied the game with his sixth goal of the season
at 14:50 of the second period. Scott Gomez got the only assist on
the goal.
Radek Dvorak gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead with 2:09 remaining
in the second period.
The second period ended with the Rangers leading the Devils,
3-2. The Devils outshot the Rangers 11-7 in the period.
Jeff Friesen picked up his fourth goal of the season at 5:12
of the third period to tie the game, 3-3. Friesen's goal was assisted
by Scott Gomez and Joe Nieuwendyk.
Sergei Brylin beat Blackburn with 8:56 remaining in the third
period to give the Devils a 4-3 lead. John Madden and Turner Stevenson
assisted by Brylin's fifth of the season.
Mark Messier tied the game with just 3:35 remaining in
the third period.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 4-4. The
Devils had a few chances in the overtime, but appeared to be playing for
the tie. They seemed more defensive-minded and did not even register
a shot on goal.
The game ended in a 4-4 tie. The Devils outshot the
Rangers 35-27 in the game.
Both teams had played to overtime victories on Tuesday.
The Devils rallied from a 0-2 deficit in the third period, to win 4-3.
The Rangers gave up a 2-0 lead after the first period, but pulled out a 3-2
win.
Though the Rangers only trail the Devils by 2 points in the
standings, they have played 5 more games than the Devils.
The Devils now lead the lifetime series, 54-51-18-1 and are
36-24-2-0 at home. Last season the Devils won the series,
3-0-1-1.
Martin Brodeur was in goal for the Devils, making his 17th
consecutive start; Dan Blackburn was in net for the Rangers, with Mike
Richter missing another game due to a concussion.
Ex-Devil Bobby Holik missed his 12th straight game as a
Ranger, with a hip injury. In his 10 games played as a Ranger, he
accumulated a mere 1 goal, 1 assist, and a -4 +/- rating. In
his last six seasons as a Devil, he missed only 10 games total.
Jamie Langenbrunner (pneumonia) and Tommy Albelin (healthy)
were scratches for the Devils. Jay Pandolfo (groin), and Stephen
Guolla (hamstring/back) remain on Injured Reserve.
