December 06, 2002 Game 24: Devils Defeat Penguins, 3-1
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins,
3-1 in East Rutherford on Friday, December 6, 2002.
Devils defenseman Oleg Tverdovsky got the Devils on the
board early, beating Penguins goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin just 29
seconds into the game. Tverdovsky's 2nd goal of the season was
assisted by Joe Nieuwendyk and Jeff Friesen.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Penguins,
1-0. The Devils outshot the Pens 12-6 in the period.
Colin White recorded his 4th goal of the season at 7:37 of
the second period. Scott Niedermayer and Scott Gomez assisted on
the goal.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Penguins,
2-0. The shots were even, 9-9 in the period.
Martin Straka ended Martin Brodeur's shutout bid with 7:31
remaining in the third period.
John Madden sealed the Devils win with an empty net goal
with just 31 seconds remaining in regulation time. Madden's 7th
goal of the season was unassisted.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 3-1. The Devils
outshot the Penguins 10-6 in the third period and 31-21 in the game.
Defenseman Ken Daneyko was a healthy scratch; Tommy Albelin
took his place in the lineup.
The Devils now lead the lifetime series over the Penguins,
58-47-13-1 and are 30-21-10-0 at home. The teams will meet four
more times this season.
Scott Stevens moved into a tie for 7th place all-time
on the career games played list, with 1540. Stevens tied John
Bucyk who accomplished the feat in 23 seasons. This is Stevens'
21st season.
The game was Colin White's 200th career NHL game.
It was Puck night at the Continental Airlines Arena, all
fans in attendance received a red souvenier Devils puck.
