The New Jersey Devils defeated the Penguins, 3-1 in Pittsburgh
on Thursday, December 19, 2002.
Milan Kraft gave the Penguins an early 1-0 lead, 3:08 into the
Joe Nieuwendyk tied the game with a nice wrist shot that beat
Jean-Sebastian Aubin at 12:55 of the first period. Nieuwendyk's 3rd goal
of the season was unassisted and snapped his 20 game streak without a
The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1. The Devils
outshot the Penguins, 9-5 in the period.
Oleg Tverdovsky took a clean faceoff win from Joe Nieuwendyk and
blasted the puck from the point past Aubin at 4:04 to give the Devils a 2-1
lead. Tverdovsky's 3rd goal of the season was assisted only by
Brian Gionta banked the puck off of Jamie Pushor past Aubin at
10:47 of the second to give the Devils a 3-1 lead. Jeff Friesen and
John Madden assisted on Gionta's 7th goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Penguins,
3-0. The Devils outshot the Pens 13-4 in the period.
There was no scoring in the third period, the game ended with the
Devils winning, 3-1. The Devils outshot the Penguins 12-7 in the third
period and 34-16 in the game.
