February 23, 2003Game 61: Devils Beat Penguins: 4-3, Joe Gets 1000
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Penguins, 4-3, in Pittsburgh
on Sunday, February 23, 2003. Joe Nieuwendyk recorded his 1000th career
NHL point with a goal in the third period.
There was no scoring in a slower defensively played first
period. The Devils outshot the Penguins, 6-5.
Mario Lemieux beat Brodeur at 4:18 of the second period to give
the Penguins a 1-0 lead.
Turner Stevenson slapped the puck through Caron's legs at 9:51 of
the second period to tie the game, 1-1. Stevenson's 6th goal of the
season was assisted by Scott Gomez and Tommy Albelin.
Jeff Friesen blasted one over Caron just 1:39 later to give the
Devils their first lead of the game. Jamie Langenbrunner and Brian
Rafalski assisted on Friesen's 18th goal of the season.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Penguins,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Penguins, 16-9 in the period.
Rico Fata tied the game at 2:54 of the third period, after
getting past Tommy Albelin. Straka slapped the puck past Brodeur just
1:36 later to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead.
Joe Nieuwendyk tied the game with a goal at 9:04 - the goal was
Nieuwendyk's 1,000th career NHL point. Jeff Friesen got the only assist
on Nieuwendyk's 13th goal of the season.
Scott Gomez put the puck past Caron just 37 seconds later to
give the Devils a 4-3 lead. Gomez's 9th goal of the season was assisted
by Brian Rafalski and Scott Stevens.
The game ended with the Devils beating the Penguins, 4-3.
The Devils outshot the Penguins 12-8 in the third and 35-22 in the game.
Brian Gionta and Turner Stevenson returned to the lineup after
missing several games with injuries.
Jim McKenzie played in his 800th career NHL game.
