March 21, 2003 Game 73: Devils Beat Penguins, 3-1
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-1, at
home on Friday, March 21, 2003.
Patrik Elias beat John Hedberg just 1:28 into the first period
to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead. Scott Gomez and Brian Gionta
assisted on Elias's 22nd goal of the season.
Jim McKenzie recorded his 4th goal of the season at 5:50 to give
the Devils a 2-0 lead. Scott Niedermayer and Pascal Rheaume assisted on
McKenzie's goal.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Penguins, 2-0.
The Devils outshot the Penguins 20-9 in the period.
There was no scoring in the second period. New Jersey
outshot Pittsburgh 14-9 in the period.
Rico Fata ruined Corey Schwab's shutout bid at 10:45 of the
third period, with a goal which cut the Devils lead in half.
Pascal Rheaume beat Hedberg at 12:57 of the third to regain the
Devils 2 goal lead. Turner Stevenson and Patrik Elias assisted on
Rheaume's 6th goal of the season.
The game ended with the Devils beating the Penguins, 3-1.
The Devils were outshot 9-8 in the third period, but outshot the Penguins,
42-24 in the game.
