April 26, 2003 Round 2 Game 2: Devils Beat Tampa, 3-2 in OT
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-2 in
overtime at home on Saturday, April 26, 2003. The overtime was the first
of the playoffs for the Devils, who now have a 2-0 lead in the series over
Tampa Bay.
Chris Dingman beat Martin Brodeur at 12:25 of the first period to
give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.
Though they thoroughly outplayed the Lightning in the first
period, the scoreboard did not reflect it. The first period ended with
Tampa Bay leading the New Jersey, 1-0. The Devils outshot the Lightning,
15-8 in the period.
Brian Rafalski beat Nikolai Khabibulin at 19:26 of the second
period, on a 5 on 3 power-play. Scott Gomez and Scott Niedermayer
assisted on Rafalski's 2nd goal of the playoffs.
Twelve seconds after Rafalski's goal, Martin St. Louis beat
Brodeur short-handed.
The second period ended with the Lightning leading the Devils,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Lightning, 9-8 in the period.
Grant Marshall scored his first goal of the playoffs at 10:26 of
the third period. Scott Gomez and Scott Niedermayer assisted on the
game-tying goal.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 2-2. The Devils
outshot Tampa 10-8 in the third period.
Just 2:09 into the first overtime period, Jamie Langenbrunner
shot the puck past Khabibulin to win the game for the Devils, 3-2. John
Madden and Brian Rafalski assisted on the game-winning goal.
Brian Rafalski returned to the lineup after missing game one of
the series with the flu.
