May 02, 2003 Round 2 Game 5: Devils Defeat Lightning: 2-1 3rd OT
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Tampa Bay Lighning, 2-1 at
home in triple-overtime on Friday, May 2, 2003. The game eliminates the
Lightning, and advances the Devils to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Nikita Alexeev beat Martin Brodeur 11:18 into the first period to
give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.
Scott Niedermayer tied the game, beating John Grahame with a
power-play goal just 2:09 after Alexeev's goal. Niedermayer's 2nd goal
of the playoffs was assisted by Brian Rafalski and Scott Gomez.
The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1. The shots
were also even at, 6-6.
There was no scoring in the second period, the Devils outshot the
Lightning, 9-5 in the period.
The teams failed to score in the third period, The Devils outshot
the Lightning, 7-6 in the period.
For the third straight period, no skater was able to put the puck
past a goaltender. The Devils outshot the Lightning, 11-9 in the first
overtime period.
The second overtime ended with no goals scored.
Grant Marshall scored the series winning goal at 11:12 of the
third overtime! Marshall's 3rd goal of the playoffs was assisted by
Scott Niedermayer and Colin White. The Devils outshot the Lightning
48-39 in the game.
