The first period ended with Colorado leading the Devils, 2-1.   The Avalanche outshot the Devils 9-6 in the period, and though led on the scoreboard, were outplayed in the period.

Scott Gomez recorded the only goal of the second period at 9:18.   Brian Rafalski and Patrik Elias assisted on Gomez's first goal of the season.

The second period ended with the game tied, 2-2.   The Devils outshot the Avalanche 15-6 in the period.

Colin White beat Aebischer at 9:30 of the third period, for his first goal of the season.   Turner Stevenson and Mike Rupp assisted on White's goal, which gave the Devils their first lead of the game.

Milan Hejduk beat Brodeur at 13:51 to tie the game, 3-3.
