The New Jersey Devils defeated the Sabres 5-2, in Buffalo,
on Friday, December 19, 2003. The Devils now lead the season series,
There was no scoring in the first period. The Sabres
outshot the Devils 9-5 in the period.
Brian Gionta beat Martin Biron 5:27 into the second period to
give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Gionta's 6th goal of the season was assisted
by John Madden and Colin White.
Ales Kotalik took an errant pass from Tommy Albelin at 11:05
and put the puck past Brodeur to even the score, 1-1.
With 1:15 left in the second period Jeff Friesen beat Biron on
the power-play. Friesen's 6th goal of the season was assisted by Paul
Martin and Scott Niedermayer.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Sabres, 2-1.
The Devils outshot Buffalo 8-7 in the second period.
Brian Gionta scored his second goal of the game at 4:57 of the
third period by slapping the puck through Biron in close. Giont's
seventh goal of the season was assisted by Scott Gomez and Jay Pandolfo.
Adam Bair got the Sabres back within one goal of the Devils,
beating Brodeur just 50 seconds after Gionta's goal.
John Madden shot the puck past Biron at 8:06 to give the Devils a
4-2 lead. Brian Gionta, recording his third point on the night, was
credited with the only assist on Madden's sixth goal of the season.
Sergei Brylin put the game out of reach with a power-play goal at
14:16. Scott Gomez and Igor Larionov assisted on Brylin's fifth goal of
The game ended with the Devils defeating the Sabres, 5-2.
The Sabres put a lot of pressure on Brodeur and the Devils, outshooting them
17-5 in the third period. The Sabres outshot the Devils 33-18 in the
Rob Skrlac, though in the lineup, did not get a shift in the game
against Buffalo. Scott Niedermayer led all skaters with 25:39 and Patrik
Elias led all forwards with 22:41 of ice-time.
