December 26, 2003 Game 33: Devils Rally, But Fall to Islanders, 4-3 in Overtime
The New Jersey Devils rallied from a 3-0 deficit at home, but
lost in overtime, 4-3 to the New York Islanders on Friday, December 26,
2003.
Dave Scatchard got the Islanders on the board by beating Martin
Brodeur at 12:30 of the first period.
The first period ended with the Islanders leading the Devils,
1-0. The Devils outshot the Islanders 9-7 in the period.
Oleg Kavasha scored at 6:02 of the second period on the
power-play to increase the Islanders lead. Mariusz Czerkawksi scored
another power-play goal at 12:59 to make it a 3-0 Islanders advantage.
Just 2:19 after the Islanders third goal, Brian Rafalski beat
Garth Snow to cut the Islanders lead to 3-1. Patrik Elias and Jeff
Friesen assisted on Rafalski's fourth goal of the season.
Patrik Elias beat Snow short-handed exactly three minutes after
Rafalski's goal to get the Devils back within one goal of the Islanders.
Elias' tenth goal of the season was assisted by Sergei Brylin.
The second period ended with the Islanders leading the Devils,
3-2. The Islanders outshot the Devils 10-8 in the period.
Jeff Friesen tied things up at 11:59 of the third period, beating
Snow with his seventh goal of the season. Erik Rasmussen and Patrik
Elias assisted on the goal.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 3-3. Mark
Parrish won the game for the Islanders just 1:25 into the overtime
period.
The season series is now tied, 2-2. The teams will face
eachother again on Long Island on Monday, December 29, 2003 and then again in
New Jersey on March 28, 2004.
The loss was the first overtime defeat for the Devils this
season.
