January 01, 2004 Game 36: Devils & Capitals Skate to 2-2 Tie
The New Jersey Devils skated to a 2-2 tie with the Capitals in
Washington on Thursday, January 1, 2004.
Mike Grier beat Martin Brodeur on a 2 on 1 to give the Capitals
a 1-0 lead at 13:02 of the first period.
The first period ended with the Capitals leading the Devils, 1-0.
The Devils outshot the Caps, 15-8 in the period.
Grant Marshall tied the game, finally scoring on the eighth
penalty called on the Capitals. Marshall's third goal of the season at
15:08 of the second period was assisted by Scott Niedermayer and Scott
Gomez. The Devils had 12:48 of power-play time, including 5 on 3
power-plays of 41 and 59 seconds, before beating Olaf Kolzig with the man-power
advantage.
Sergei Brylin deflected the puck past Kolzig just 6 seconds into
a power-play with just 11 seconds remaining in the second period.
Brylin's sixth goal of the season was assisted by Brian Rafalski and Scott
Niedermayer.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Capitals,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Capitals, 12-4 in the period.
Joel Kwiatkowski beat Martin Brodeur at 4:01 of the third period
on the power-play, to tie the game, 2-2.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 2-2. The Caps
outshot the Devils, 12-6 in the period. There was no scoring in the
overtime period -- the Devils outshot the Capitals 36-27 in the game, but were
outshot 14-6 in the third period.
Craig Darby and Tuomas Pihlman were called up and in the lineup
with Erik Rasmussen (shoulder) and Igor Larionov (leg) both out with
injuries.
The Devils lead the season series, 1-0-1. The teams will
meet twice more this season.
