The New Jersey Devils skated to a 2-2 tie with the Capitals in
Washington on Thursday, January 1, 2004.
Mike Grier beat Martin Brodeur on a 2 on 1 to give the Capitals
a 1-0 lead at 13:02 of the first period.
The first period ended with the Capitals leading the Devils, 1-0.
The Devils outshot the Caps, 15-8 in the period.
Grant Marshall tied the game, finally scoring on the eighth
penalty called on the Capitals. Marshall's third goal of the season at
15:08 of the second period was assisted by Scott Niedermayer and Scott
Gomez. The Devils had 12:48 of power-play time, including 5 on 3
power-plays of 41 and 59 seconds, before beating Olaf Kolzig with the man-power
Sergei Brylin deflected the puck past Kolzig just 6 seconds into
a power-play with just 11 seconds remaining in the second period.

Joel Kwiatkowski beat Martin Brodeur at 4:01 of the third period
on the power-play, to tie the game, 2-2.
Regulation time ended with the game tied, 2-2. The Caps
outshot the Devils, 12-6 in the period. There was no scoring in the
overtime period -- the Devils outshot the Capitals 36-27 in the game, but were
outshot 14-6 in the third period.
