January 17, 2004 Game 44: Devils Beat Capitals 2-1 in Overtime
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Washington Capitals 2-1 at
home in overtime on Saturday, January 17, 2004.
Here are a few of my
pictures from the game.
Jaromir Jagr beat Corey Schwab 7:30 into the first period to give
Washington an early 1-0 lead. The first period ended with the Capitals
leading the Devils, 1-0. The Devils outshot the Caps 10-8 in the
period.
Patrik Elias beat Olaf Kolzig just 46 seconds into the second
period on the power-play to tie the game, 1-1. Elias' 14th goal of the
season was assisted by Scott Niedermayer and Brian Rafalski.
Rob Skrlac picked up a few more NHL penalty minutes when he
fought Stephen Peat at 3:36 of the second period. The two earned their
minutes and gave the crowd a good show, as they scrapped for quite some
time.
The second period ended with the teams tied, 1-1. The
Devils outshot the Capitals 9-7 in the period.
There was no scoring in the third period. Patrik Elias
recorded his second goal of the game at 2:17 of the overtime to win the game
for the Devils. Elias' 15th goal of the season was assisted by Brian
Rafalski and Scott Gomez.
The Devils now lead the season series, 2-0-1. The teams
will meet one more time before the end of the season, in Washington on February
19, 2004.
The Devils honored the Captain Scott Stevens prior to the
start of the game. Stevens was on hand for the brief ceremony, but
did not play in the game, due to an unknown health problem.
