January 25, 2004 Game 48: Devils Beat Thrashers, 3-2
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 3-2 at home
on Sunday, January 25, 2004.
Grant Marshall deflected the puck past Byron Dafoe at 3:37 of the
first period on the power-play to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Brian
Rafalski and Scott Gomez assisted on Marshall's fifth goal of the
season.
Patrik Elias beat Dafoe at 12:15 on the power-play increasing the
Devils lead, and their power-play percentage. Elias' 17th goal of the
season was assisted by Brian Rafalski and Scott Niedermayer.
Jeff Coawn beat Martin Brodeur at 14:14 to cut the Devils lead to
one goal.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Thrashers,
2-1. The Devils outshot the Thrashers 11-9 in the period.
There was no scoring in the second period, though the Devils
again outshot the Thrashers, 11-9.
Ilya Kovulchuk beat Martin Brodeur short-handed at 4:19 of the
third period to tie the game, 2-2.
Jeff Friesen blasted the puck past Dafoe at 6:36 of the third
period to give the Devils a 3-2 lead. Friesen's 11th goal of the season
was unassisted.
The game ended without any additional scoring; the Devils won by
a final score of 3-2. The Devils outshot the Thrashers 12-8 in the third
period and 34-26 in the game.
The Devils now lead the season series 2-0. The teams will
meet two more times before the end of the regular season.
