January 29, 2004 Game 50: Devils Fall To Red Wings: 5-2
The New Jersey Devils lost to the Red Wings, 5-2 in Detroit on
Thursday, January 29, 2004.
Jamie Rivers beat Martin Brodeur just off a faceoff at 11:01 with
a quick wrist shot. Unfortunately, Colin White while clearing a Detroit
player out, screened Brodeur just as the puck fluttered by.
Erik Rasmussen beat Curtis Joseph at 13:48 of the first period to
tie the game, 1-1. Rasmussen's third goal of the season was
unassisted.
Mathieu Schneider beat Martin Brodeur on the power-play at 16:04
to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead.
The first period ended with the Red Wings leading the Devils, 2-1
even thought the Devils outshot them, 12-5.
Brett Hull beat Martin Brodeur just 46 seconds into the second
period with a no-look shot through the smallest of openings over Brodeur's
shoulder.
Turner Stevenson beat Joseph at 3:31 to get the Devils back
within one goal of Detroit. Jeff Friesen assisted on Stevenson's sixth
goal of the season.
The second period ended with Detroit leading, 3-2. The
Devils outshot the Red Wings 10-7 in the period.
Tomas Homstrom made it a 4-2 Detroit lead by beating Brodeur at
8:30 of the third period.
Chris Draper added an empty net, short-handed goal with just
X remaining in the game.
The game ended with Detroit winning, 5-2. The shots were
even, 8-8 in the third period, the Devils outshot the Red Wings, 31-20 in the
game.
Jamie Langenbrunner made his return to the lineup after being out
since a knee injury sidelined him on November 28, 2003.
The game was the only regular season meeting between the two
teams this season.
