The New Jersey Devils lost 3-0, to the Maple Leafs in Toronto
on Saturday, February 28, 2004.
9:25 into the first period, Karel Pilar beat Martin Brodeur on
the power-play to give the Leafs a 1-0 lead. Darcy Tucker added another
power-play goal with 1:25 remaining.. and Alexei Ponikarovsky scored 19 seconds
later to add to the Leafs lead.
The Maple Leafs dominated the Devils in first period -
outshooting them 16-3 and leading 3-0 on the scoreboard. The Devils hurt
themselves in the first, taking 4 penalties in the first 20 minutes.
The Devils outshot the Leafs 8-3 in the second period, but were
unable to score - the Leafs held the 3-0 lead.
There was no scoring in the third period. The Leafs
outshot the Devils 8-6 in the third period and 27-17 in the game.
Scott Gomez and Patrik Elias were shotless and linemate Brian
Gionta was held to 2 shots. Jeff Friesen led all Devils with 5
The season series ends tied, 1-1-2. The game was the last
between the teams of the 2003-2004 regular season.
The game was the first of a 5-game road trip for the Devils, they
play next in Montreal, before heading Southeast to Florida, Tampa Bay, and
Carolina. The Devils next home game with be played on the trade
deadline, March 9.
