March 01, 2004 Game 65: Devils Lose to Canadiens 2-1 in Final Seconds
The New Jersey Devils lost to the Canadiens 2-1, in Montreal
on Monday, March 1, 2004. Montreal scored with just 24 seconds left in
regulation time to win the game.
There were many good scoring chances in the first period, but no
goals scored - the Canadiens outshot the Devils 14-9 in the period.
Richard Zednik deflected a shot past Martin Brodeur 4:38 into the
second period while the teams were playing 4 on 4, to give Montreal a 1-0
lead.
The second period came to a close with the Canadiens leading the
Devils, 1-0. The Canadiens again outshot the Devils, 14-11 in the
period.
Turner Stevenson tied the game 7:58 into the third period,
beating Jose Theodore with a shot from in front of the net. Jeff Friesen
and Colin White assisted on Stevenson's 10th goal of the season.
After several un-called penalties committed by both teams, the
referees gave in to the crowd, and call a highly questionable penalty on Jay
Pandolfo with 3:43 remaining in regulation time. Scott Niedermayer was
then called for elbowing at 18:01 to extend the Habs man-power
advantage.
With 24 seconds remaining in regulation time, Jason Ward beat
Martin Brodeur on the power-play goal to give the Habs a 2-1 lead.
The game ended with the Canadiens defeating the Devils, 2-1.
Montreal outshot New Jersey 11-9 in the third period and 39-29 in the
game.
Martin Brodeur was fantastic in net, making numerous highlight
saves. He was named the games' first star.
Montreal had 5 power-play opportunities, while the Devils had
none.
The season series is now tied, 1-1. They will meet twice
more before the end of the season.
The game was the second of a 5-game road trip for the Devils,
after 2 games in Canada, they now head Southeast to Florida, Tampa Bay, and
Carolina. The Devils next home game with be played on the trade
deadline, March 9.
