March 15, 2004 Game 72: Devils Beat Rangers: 3-1, Missing 3 of 4 Top D
The New Jersey Devils beat the Rangers 3-1 in New York on Monday,
March 15, 2004. The Devils outshot the Rangers 45-18 in the game.
Colin White was added to the list of missing Devils defenseman, out with
a stiff neck.
There was no scoring in the first period, though the Devils had
several good chances. New Jersey outshot the Rangers 15-7 and had three
power-play opportunities, but could not get one past Mike Dunham.
Jan Hrdina beat Dunham with his first goal as a Devil at 10:14 of
the second period. Hrdina's 12th goal of the season was
unassisted.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Rangers, 1-0.
The Devils outshot the Rangers 13-6 in the period.
Patrik Elias made it a 2-0 Devils lead by beating Mike Dunham at
2:57 of the third period. Elias' 34th goal of the season was assisted by
Scott Gomez and Turner Stevenson.
Jozef Balej scored his first NHL goal, beating Martin Brodeur at
6:24 of the third period to get the Rangers on the scoreboard.
Jay Pandolfo beat Dunham with just 1:30 remaining to cap off the
scoring. Jamie Langenbrunner was credited with the only assist on
Pandolfo's 12th goal of the season.
The game ended with the Devils defeating the Rangers, 3-1.
The Devils outshot the Rangers 17-5 in the third period and 45-18 in the
game.
The Devils now lead the season series, 3-1-1. The teams
will meet once more this season (on March 30, in New Jersey).
Scott Stevens (Concussion), Brian Gionta (leg), Colin White
(neck), Igor Larionov (wrist), Brian Gionta (nose), and Erik Rasmussen
(healthy) were all out of the lineup. Raymond Giroux made his first
appearance of the season, and Viktor Kozlov made his Devils debut.
