April 10, 2004 Round 1 Game 2: Flyers Beat Devils 3-2
The New Jersey Devils lost 3-2 to the Flyers in Philadelphia in
Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarter Finals on Saturday, April 10, 2004.
With the Flyers victory, they now hold a 2-0 series lead over the
Devils.
With Scott Niedermayer in the penalty box for holding, Mark
Recchi beat Martin Brodeur to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead at 14:49 of the first
period. Joni Pitkanen and Kim Johnsson assisted on the power-play
goal.
The first period ended with the Flyers leading the Devils, 1-0.
The Devils outshot the Flyers 9-5 in the period.
Jan Hrdina beat Robert Esche 4:44 into the second period to tie
the game, 1-1. Hrdina's second goal of the playoffs was assisted by
Jamie Langenbrunner and Erik Rasmussen.
Alexei Zhamnov was able to smack the puck through Brodeur after a
bad play at 7:24 to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead. Jeremy Roenick and Tony
Amonte assisted on the goal.
The second period ended with the Flyers leading the Devils 2-1
and outshooting them 8-7.
Mattias Timander beat Brodeur at 10:31 of the third period to
give Philadelphia a 2 goal lead. Jeremy Roenick and Alexei Zhamnov
assisted on the goal.
Brian Gionta thrashed the puck past Esche at 14:35 to get the
Devils back within one goal of the Flyers. Gionta's first goal of the
playoffs was assisted by Patrik Elias and Scott Gomez
Jamie Langenbrunner was called for a questionable penalty with
just 38 seconds remaining in the third period to ruin the Devils chances of a
late comeback. The game ended with the Flyers winning, 3-2. The
Devils outshot the Flyers 10-5 in the third period and 26-18 in the
game.
The Devils were again outhit, and with two roster changes for
this game, gave up even more size to Philadelphia. Igor Larionov
replaced Viktor Kozlov and Tommy Albelin replaced Sean Brown.
