October 15, 2005Game 5: Hurricanes Blow Out Devils: 6-1
The New Jersey Devils lost to the Carloina Hurricanes, 6-1 at
home on Saturday, October 15, 2005. The loss dropped the Devils record
to 2-3. The Devils next game will be played at home against the Florida
Panthers on Tuesday.
Radim Vrbata beat Martin Brodeur at 5:32 of the first period on a
5 on 3 power-play to give the Hurricanes an early 1-0 lead. Erik Cole on
a clear breakaway put the puck over Brodeur at 16:37. Just 19 seconds
after Cole's goal, Matt Cullen scored to increase the Canes lead to 3
The first period ended with the Hurricanes leading the Devils,
3-0. The Hurricanes outshot the Devils 10-8 in the period.
Jay Pandolfo took a rebound and took a great backhand shot to
beat Cam Ward at 6:18 of the second period to get the Devils on the board.
Pandolfo's first goal of the season was assisted by Richard Matvichuk
and John Madden.
Rod Brind'Amour beat Brodeur on the power-play at 14:35 to make
it 4-1, Hurricanes. Brodeur was fooled by a back pass from behind the
net and was easily beat with a shot from Josef Vasicek with just 1:12 remaining
in the period.
The second period ended with the Canes leading the Devils, 5-1.
The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 14-9 in the period.
The third period began with a change in the goal - Scott
Clemmensen made his first appearance of the season. Rod Brind'Amour got
his second goal of the game by beating Clemmensen at 10:49.
The game ended with the Canes winning, 6-1. Colin White
left the ice late in the second period with a 'pulled muscle', and did not
