November 18, 2005 Game 19: Devils Beat Canadiens 5-3
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 5-3 at
home on Friday, November 18. The Devils gave up 3 goals after having
a 2-0 lead, but were able to recover to win the game.
Scott Gomez ripped the puck past Jose Theodore at 8:08 of the
first period on a 5 on 3 power-play to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Paul
Martin and Brian Rafalski assisted on Gomez's fifth goal of the season.
Brian Gionta deflected a shot from Scott Gomez at 15:49 on a
power-play to increase the Devils lead. Paul Martin also assisted on
Gionta's 11th goal of the season.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Canadiens,
2-0. The Devils outshot the Habs 17-8 in the period.
Alexander Perezhogin got the Canadiens on the board by beating
Martin Brodeur at 7:27 of the second period. Richard Zednik tied the
game with a goal just 42 seconds later. Saku Koivu scored at 14:12 to
give the Habs their first lead of the game.
Viktor Kozlov tied the game by beating Theodore with just 1:21
remaining in the second period. Kozlov's fifth goal of the season was
assisted by Scott Gomez and Richard Matvichuk.
The second period ended with the teams tied, 3-3. The
Canadiens outshot the Devils 10-9 in the period.
Brian Gionta regained the lead for the Devils with a goal at
7:25 of the third play on the power-play. Gionta's second goal of the
game was assisted by Brian Rafalski and Sergei Brylin.
John Madden scored an empty net goal with just 24 seconds
remaining in the third period to seal the win for the Devils.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 5-3. The Canadiens
outshot the Devils 10-5 in the third period, but were outshot 31-28 in the
game.
