Game 36: Maple Leafs Beat Devils 2-1

The New Jersey Devils lost 2-1 in Toronto to the Maple Leafs on Monday, December 26, 2005.

John Madden made a great deflection that beat Eddie Belfour at 3:59 of the first period to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead.   Paul Martin and Richard Matvichuk assisted on Madden's sixth goal of the season.

Mats Sundin beat Martin Brodeur at 13:35 to tie the game, 1-1.   Bryan McCabe gave the Maple Leafs the lead with a goal on a power-play at 16:20.

The first period ended with the Leafs leading the Devils, 2-1.   The Devils outshot Toronto 11-8 in the period.

Cam Janssen had a nice fight with Darcy Tucker about mid-way through the second period - for which Tucker was assessed a 5 minute match penalty because he struck Janssen twice with his helmut.

There was no scoring in the second period, and the Devils were outshot by the Leafs 13-5 - even with a full 5 minute power-play.

The third period ended with the score the same, but the Devils outshot the Leafs 18-6 in the period.
