March 10, 2006 Game 63: Devils Defeat Capitals 4-3 in Shootout
The New Jersey Devils beat the Capitals with a 4-3 shootout
victory in Washington on Friday, March 10, 2006.
Matt Pettinger beat Martin Brodeur just 3:59 into the first
period to give the Capitals an early 1-0 lead. Bryan Muir made it a 2-0
lead with a goal at 8:00.
Brian Gionta got the Devils on the board when he beat Olaf Kolzig
at 13:05. Patrik Elias and Paul Martin assisted on Gionta's 35th goal
of the season.
Scott Gomez tied the game with just 6 seconds remaining in the
first period. Gomez's 23rd goal of the season was scored on a 5 on 3
power-play and was assisted by Patrik Elias and Jamie Langenbrunner.
The first period ended with the game tied, 2-2. The Devils
outshot the Capitals 10-7 in the period.
There were no goals scored in the second period, the game
remained tied, 2-2. The Devils outshot the Caps 7-6 in the
period.
Scott Gomez scored his second goal of the game at 2:55 of the
third period, when he deflected Brian Gionta's shot past Kolzig. Patrik
Elias also assisted on Gomez's goal.
With the Caps on a power-play and an empty net, Washington scored
on the 2 man advantage with only 34 seconds remaining in regulation
time.
