The New Jersey Devils defeated the Canadiens, 3-2 in Montreal
on Saturday, April 8, 2006. The win increased the Devils winning streak
to 6 games, and ended a Montreal 8-game winning streak.
Brian Gionta beat Montreal netminder Cristobal Huet at 17:16 of
the first period to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Richard Matvichuk and
Scott Gomez assisted on Gionta's 43rd goal of the season.
The Habs outshot the Devils 16-6 in the first period, but the
Devils led 1-0 on the scoreboard.
Scott Gomez increased the Devils lead with a goal at 10:15 of the
second period. Brian Gionta and Brian Rafalski assisted on Gomez's 29th
goal of the season.
The Devils outshot the Canadiens 16-11 in the second period,
which ended with them leading, 2-0.
Scott Gomez scored his second goal of the game at 10:13 of the
third period to give New Jersey a 3-0 lead. Gomez's 30th goal of the
season was unassisted.
Mike Ribeiro ruined Martin Brodeur's shutout bid with a goal at
11:20 of the third period. Chris Higgins gave the Habs hope with a
power-play goal with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation time.
The game ended with the Devils defeating the Habs, 3-2.
The Canadiens outshot the Devils 15-7 in the third period and 42-29 in the
