The New Jersey Devils defeated the Rangers, 6-1 in New York on
Sunday, December 17, 2006.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 1-0 lead with a 5 on 3 power-play
goal that beat Kevin Weekes with just 34 seconds remaining in the first period.
Brian Rafalski and Brian Gionta assisted on Elias' 11th goal of the
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Rangers, 1-0.
The Devils outshot the Rangers 8-7 in the period.
Jamie Langenbrunner scored at 6:25 of the second period on a
power-play to give New Jersey a 2-0 lead. Langenbrunner's 13th goal of
the season was scored unassisted.
Petr Prucha got the Rangers on the board with a goal that beat
Martin Brodeur at 7:23.
Sergei Brylin added a third Devils power-play goal at 10:05 to
give the Devils a 3-1 lead. Brylin's fifth goal of the season was
assisted by Zach Parise.
The shots were even, 13-13 in the second period, which ended with
the Devils leading 3-1.
Brylin scored his second goal of the game at 1:49 of the third
period to give the Devils a 4-1 lead. Zach Parise was credited with the
only assist on Brylin's goal.
Patrik Elias beat Weekes at 14:59. The goal light did not
come on and the referee did not see it, so play continued -- for 3:16.
Once the whistle was blown the play was reviewed, the goal was announced, and
the clock was moved back 3:16. Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez assisted on
Elias' second goal of the game.
Zach Parise scored at 18:08 to give the Devils a 6-1 lead.
