December 29, 2006Game 37: Devils Beat Capitals 4-3
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Washington Capitals 4-3 at
home on December 29, 2006. The Devils now lead the season series
Lawrence Nycholat beat Martin Brodeur 5:25 into the first period
to give Washington a 1-0 lead.
Scott Gomez put the puck past Olaf Kolzig with just 1:07
remaining in the first period to tie the game, 1-1. Patrik Elias and
Paul Martin assisted on Gomez's fifth goal of the season.
The Devils outshot the Capitals 16-5 in the first period, but the
score was tied, 1-1.
Sergei Brylin gave the Devils a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal
at 6:22 of the second period. Brian Rafalski and Zach Parise assisted on
Brylin's eighth goal of the season.
Scott Gomez scored his second goal of the game at 13:31 to
increase the Devils lead to two goals. Brian Gionta and Patrik Elias
assisted on the goal.
Brooks Laich scored for Washington on a power-play at 16:50 to
get the Capitals back within one goal.
The Caps outshot the Devils 16-12 in the second period, which
ended with the Devils leading 3-2.
Patrik Elias took a great pass from Scott Gomez and shot the puck
past Kolzig at 6:43 to make it a 4-2 Devils lead. Paul Martin also
assisted on Elias' 14th goal of the season.
Alexander Semin gave the Capitals hope with a goal getting them
back within one goal with just 44 seconds remaining in the third period.
