April 08, 2007 Game 82: Devils Give Islanders Playoff Spot, Lose 2-3 (Shootout)
The New Jersey Devils lost 2-3 at home in a shootout against the
New York Islanders on Sunday, April 8, 2007. The Devils had a lackluster
performance, but got on the board late and struck fear into the hearts of the
Islanders and their fans when they tied the game with just .9 seconds remaining
in regulation time.
Scott Clemmensen made a rare start in net for the Devils and
Brian Gionta returned to the lineup. Defenseman Richard Matvichuk also
made his first appearance on the ice this season.
The Islanders needed both points to squeak their way into the
playoffs - one point and they would have tied the Maple Leafs for the 8th seed,
but Toronto had the tiebreaker.
Richard Park beat Clemmensen at 11:53 of the first period to give
the Islanders a 1-0 lead.
The Devils only took 3 shots on Islander netminder Wade
Dubielewicz in te first period (to the Islanders 9 shots). The first
period ended with New York leading 1-0.
The shots were even, 9-9 in the second period, but neither team
put the puck in the net.
Richard Park scored his second goal of the game at 7:51 of the
third period to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead.
The Devils picked up their game and John Madden scored at 15:47
to cut the Islanders lead to one goal. Jay Pandolfo and Sergei Brylin
assisted on Madden's 11th goal of the season.
With just 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation time, John Madden
scored his second goal of the game to tie it, 2-2. Jamie Langenbrunner
and Patrik Elias assisted on the goal.
Neither team scored in the five minute over time, sending the
game to the shootout - where the Islanders scored twice and the Devils only
once.
