March 22, 2008 Game 75: Devils Take a Beating, Lose 1-7 in Pittsburgh
The New Jersey Devils were crushed 7-1 by the Penguins in
Pittsburgh on Saturday, March 22, 2008.
Jarkko Ruutu got the Penguins on the board with a power-play goal
that beat Martin Brodeur just 1:30 into the first period.
Brian Gionta tied the game with a highlight-reel shorthanded goal
at 9:04. Gionta's 21st goal of the season was assisted by John
Madden.
The first period ended with the game tied, 1-1. The Devils
outshot the Penguins 13-8 in the period.
Ryan Malone beat Brodeur with a shorthanded goal at 16:13 of the
second period.
The Penguins led 2-1 at the end of the second period, in which
the shots were even, 7-7.
The third period complete collapse by New Jersey included 5
Pittsburgh goals (2 on a power-play) and saw Kevin Weekes in net for relief of
Brodeur mid-way through the period. The Penguins third period goals were
scored by Malone, Dupuis, Malkin(2), and Sykora.
