April 11, 2008 R1 G2: Devils Fall to Rangers (& Officials) 1-2, Now 0-2 Series Deficit
The New Jersey Devils now find themselves in a 0-2 series hole
after a 1-2 loss to the New York Rangers at the Prudential Center on Friday,
April 11, 2008.
The shots were even, 9-9 in the first period, which ended with
the game still scoreless.
Christian Backman cross-checked Zach Parise in the mouth at 6:53
of the second period, knocking out two of his front top teeth.
Neither team scored in the second period, though the Devils
outshot the Rangers 9-4 in the period.
Colin White accidentally nudged Martin Brodeur off the post he
was protecting and Jaromir Jagr took advantage, sneaking the puck into the back
of the net at 4:26 of the third period. Sean Avery scored just 23
seconds later to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.
John Madden gave the Devils hope with a goal that beat Henrik
Lunqvist at 18:37. Madden's first goal of the playoffs was assisted by
Patrik Elias and Paul Martin.
Several bad officiating calls in the last 90 seconds of the game
prevented the Devils from having the chance to tie the game. A weak
penalty called on Jamie Langenbrunner at 19:05, was followed by an icing call
on the Devils that should never have happened (since they were short-handed).
To top off the excellent officiating, there were several non-calls
against the Rangers that were more clearly more egregious than the call on
Langenbrunner.
