Game 1: Devils Win Season Opener 2-1 Over Islanders

    The New Jersey Devils won their 2008-2009 season opener 2-1 at home over the the New York Islanders on Friday, October 10, 2008.

    Doug Weight gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal that beat Martin Brodeur at 9:48 of the first period.

    Zach Parise tied the game by putting a power-play goal past Joey MacDonald at 12:49.   David Clarkson and Paul Martin assisted on the Devils' first goal of the 2008-2009 season.

    The Devils outshot the Islanders 11-5 in the first period, which ended with the score tied, 1-1.

    Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 2-1 lead with a goal just 29 seconds into the second period.   Brian Gionta and Brian Rolston assisted on Elias' goal.

    The second period ended with the Devils leading the Islanders, 2-1.   The Islanders outshot the Devils 12-7 in the period.

    neither team scored in the third period, the Devils won the game, 2-1.   The Devils outshot the Islanders 11-9 in the third period and 29-26 in the game.
