December 12, 2008 Game 26: Devils Hammer Rangers 8-5
The New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Rangers 8-5 at the
Prudential Center on Friday, December 12, 2008. The Devils blew a 5-1
second period lead, letting the Rangers tie the game, before going on to win
8-5.
4:04 into the first period, Jay Pandolfo beat Henrik Lundqvist
short-handed, to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. John Madden and Bryce
Salvador assisted on Pandolfo's third goal of the season.
Markus Naslund beat Scott Clemmensen at 15:54 to tie the game,
1-1.
Travis Zajac gave the Devils a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at
16:59. Zajac's sixth goal of the season was assisted by Patrik Elias and
Zach Parise.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Rangers, 2-1.
The shots were even, 11-11 in the period.
The Devils increased their lead when Travis Zajac scored his
second goal of the game just 1:00 into the second period. The goal was
assisted by Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner.
Johnny Oduya added a short-handed goal at 7:31 to make it a 4-1
Devils lead. Brian Gionta and Zach Parise assisted on Oduya's second
goal of the season.
New Jersey took a 5-1 lead when Dainius Zubrus scored at 11:33.
Brian Gionta assisted on Zubrus' eighth goal of the season.
Nikolai Zherdev scored at 15:46 and Scott Gomez scored at 18:22
to cut the Devils lead to two goals.
The Devils outshot the Rangers 19-9 in the second period, which
ended with the Devils leading, 5-3.
Paul Mara scored just 1:28 into the third period and Ryan
Callahan tied the game, 5-5 with a goal at 11:18.
Patrik Elias responded to New York's four straight goals by
beating Lundqvist just 11 seconds after Callahan's goal. Dainius Zubrus
and Brian Gionta assisted on Elias' 12th goal of the season.
Brian Gionta scored his eighth goal of the season at 13:04.
Dainius Zubrus and Patrik Elias assisted on the Devils seventh goal of
the game.
Jamie Langenbrunner capped the scoring with a goal at 15:07,
making it an 8-5 Devils lead. Zach Parise and Bobby Holik assisted on
Langenbrunner's fifth goal of the season.
The Rangers oushot the Devils 16-4 in the third period and 36-34
in the game.
