The New Jersey Devils lost to the Hurricanes, 2-3 in North
Carolina on Tuesday, January 6, 2009.
Carolina took an early lead when Ray Whitney beat Scott
Clemmensen just 1:03 into the first period. The Hurricanes outshot the
Devils 8-7 in the first period, which ended with the Canes leading, 1-0.
Sergei Samsonov scored a power-play goal at 15:15 of the second
period to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead. The second period ended with
the Canes leading, 2-0. The Hurricanes outshot the Devils 8-7 in the
Tuomo Ruutu gave Carolina a three goal lead, scoring at 9:58 of
the third period.
Paul Martin scored a power-play goal at 12:12, in an uncommon
play where Scott Clemmensen was on the bench. Patrik Elias and Brian
Rolston assisted on Martin's third goal of the season.
Patrik Elias gave the Devils hope with a goal at 19:38, but the
team was unable to score again before the final buzzer. Dainius Zubrus
and David Clarkson assisted on Elias' 18th goal of the season.
