April 09, 2009 Game 81: Devils Beat Senators: 3-2 Shootout
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Senators 3-2 in a shootout in
Ottawa on Thursday, April 9, 2009.
Jarkko Ruutu beat Martin Brodeur at 4:13 of the first period to
give the Senators a 1-0 lead. The first period ended with Ottawa leading
1-0. The shots were even, 10-10 in the period.
Brian Gionta tied the game with a goal that beat Alex Auld at
3:01 of the second period. Brendan Shanahan and Mike Mottau assisted on
Gionta's 20th goal of the season.
Brian Rolston took advantage of Auld's weak play of the puck, to
make it 2-1 Devils at 3:47. David Clarkson was credited with the only
assist of Rolston's 15th goal of the season.
With Auld on the bench, Dany Heatly scored to tie the game, 2-2
at 19:00 to force overtime. Neither team scored in the overtime, so the
game was sent to the shootout.
