October 08, 2009 Game 3: Devils Defeat Lightning 4-3 in Shootout
The New Jersey Devils got their first points of the season with
a 4-3 shootout win in Tampa Bay over the Lightning on Thursday, October 8,
2009.
Zach Parise gave the Devils an early 1-0 lead with a power-play
goal that beat Mike Smith at 4:46 of the first period. Travis Zajac and
Paul Martin assisted on Parise's first goal of the season.
The Devils outshot the Lightning 12-7 in the first period, which
ended with New Jersey leading 1-0.
Steve Stamkos beat Martin Brodeur with a wrist shot at 9:49 of
the second period to tie the game, 1-1.
A goal from Jay Pandolfo at 18:09 gave New Jersey a 2-1 lead.
Pandolfo's first goal of the season was assisted by David Clarkson and
Rob Niedermayer.
The Lightning outshot the Devils 25-9 in the second period, but
the Devils led 2-1 after 40 minutes of game time.
Steven Stamkos scored his second goal of the game at 1:52 of the
third period, on a power-play. Todd Fedoruk scored at 5:41 to give the
Lightning their first lead of the game.
With just 1 second remaining in regulation time, Travis Zajac
scored to send the game to overtime. Zajac's second goal of the season
was assisted by Zach Parise and Jamie Langenbrunner.
The Lightning outshot the Devils 9-6 in the third period.
Neither team scored in the overtime period, forcing a shootout.
