The New Jersey Devils started the second half of the 2010-2011
season with a bang, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-3 at the Prudential
Center on Sunday, January 9, 2011.
Teddy Purcell beat Martin Brodeur at 2:36 of the first period to
give the Lightning an early 1-0 lead.
David Clarkson evened the score with a goal that beat Dan Ellis
at 5:55. Clarkson's sixth goal of the season was assisted by Tim Sestito
and Rod Pelley.
Ryan Malone put Tampa back on top with a goal at 16:01.
The first period ended with the Lightning leading the Devils
2-1. Tampa Bay outshot the Devils 13-5 in the period.
Neither teamed scored in the second period, in which the
Lightning outshot the Devils 13-11.
David Clarkson tied the game with his second goal of the game on
a power-play at 4:14 of the third period. Ilya Kovalchuk and Patrik
Elias assisted on the goal.
Jason Arnott beat Ellis at 7:52 to give the Devils their first
lead of the game. Arnott's 10th goal of the season was assisted by
Henrik Tallinder and Vladimir Zharkov.
A goal from Dainius Zubrus at 14:06 gave the Devils a 4-2 lead.
Zubrus' sixth goal of the season was assisted by Brian Rolston and
Patrik Elias added an empty net goal at 18:45 to make it a 3 goal
Devils lead. Brian Rolston was credited with the only assist on Elias'
ninth goal of the season.
Dominic Moore scored for Tampa at 19:08, which sent Ellis back to
Nick Palmieri scored his first career NHL goal (empty net) at
19:46 to make it a 6-3 Devils victory. Ilya Kovalchuk and Martin Brodeur
assisted on the goal.
