December 08, 2011 Game 27: Devils Resilient, Beat Senators 5-4 in Shootout
The New Jersey Devils were victorious, 5-4 at home in a shootout
over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, December 8, 2011.
The Devils had a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period, with
goals that beat Martin Brodeur at 6:31 (Milan Michalek) and 17:45 (Nick
Foligno).
Johan Hedberg started the second period in net for New
Jersey.
Petr Sykora beat Alex Auld, but the goal was not allowed, due to
a *weak* holding call on Mattias Tedenby. Shortly thereafter, Sykora was
called for an 'unsportsmanlike conduct' penalty - while he was on the bench.
I'm not sure what horrible words Sykora said, but I do know that this
sequence of events due to weak and thin-skinned officials, changed what would
have been a 2-1 game, to 3-0 Senators. Daniel Alfredsson scored a 5 on 3
power-play goal at 9:41.
Zach Parise got the Devils on the board at 14:59 with a
short-handed goal that the officials were unable to manufacture and excuse to
disallow. Adam Henrique was credited with the only assist on Parise's
eighth goal of the season.
A second short-handed goal for New Jersey came from Dainius
Zubrus at 2:59 of the third period. Patrik Elias assisted on Zubrus'
eighth goal of the season.
Mattias Tedenby scored his first goal of the season at 9:08 to
tie the game 3-3. David Clarkson and Adam Henrique assisted on the
goal.
Ilya Kovalchuk gave the Devils their first lead of the game just
37 seconds later to make the home crowd go wild. Kovalchuk's eighth goal
of the season was assisted by Zach Parise and Adam Henrique.
More poor officiating (a clear penalty, uncalled) led to Ottawa
tying the game with just 5 seconds remaining in regulation time.
Neither team scored in the overtime period, forcing a shootout.
Ilya Kovalchuk missed, but Zach Parise, Patrik Elias, and Adam Henrique
scored in the shootout to win the game for New Jersey.
