May 01, 2001 Devils Win 3-2 in OT
The Devils defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2
in overtime, Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Toronto. This Game
3 win has given them a 2-1 lead in their Eastern Conference
Semi-Final best of seven series. The Devils also have
regained home ice advantage by winning in Toronto.
Bobby Holik gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at
9:21 in the first period, on the power-play. Jason Arnott
and Patrick Elias got assists on the goal. The two points
Arnott & Elias picked up are the first points of this second
round of the playoffs for the "A" line.
At the end of the first period, the Devils led
1-0.
Gary Valk scored at 8:52 in the second to tie
the game 1-1. Valk had been out of the lineup for over
a month, but was cleared for their first round against Ottawa.
However, tonight was his first game back in the lineup.
Steve Thomas scored a power-play goal for the Leafs at
11:26 to give Toronto a 2-1 lead.
At the end of the second period, the Maple Leafs
led 2-1.
Scott Gomez scored at 1:34 in the third period
to tie the game 2-2. Brian Rafalski and Scott Stevens
got assists on the goal.
Sergei Brylin left in the third period with some
sort of ankle injury - he appeared to twist it skating for the
the puck hear the boards. He had to be helped off the
ice and did not return to the game.
The Devils dominated most of the third period,
but were not able to get more than the one Gomez goal past
CuJo.
At the end of regulation, the teams were tied
2-2.
Brian Rafalski scored the overtime game winning
goal at 7:00 on a pass the was deflected into the net by Toronto
Defenseman, Cory Cross. Bobby Holik got an assist on the
goal.
With this overtime win, the Devils have improved
their playoff overtime record over the last eleven, to 3-11.
