January 01, 2002 Devils Defeat Blues 2-1
The New Jersey Devils defeated the St. Louis Blues, 2-1
at home, on Tuesday, January 1, 2002.
Sergei Brylin beat Fred Brathwaite at 4:35 of the first
period. Scott Stevens got the primary assist on Brylin's 4th goal
of the season. Mike Commodore also got an assist on the early goal
which gave the Devils a 1-0 lead.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Blues,
1-0. The Devils outshot the Blues 8-6 in the period.
Patrik Elias blasted the puck past Brathwaite at 13:17 of
the second period to give the Devils a 2-0 lead. The goal was
Elias's 16th of the season and was unassisted.
The second period ended with the Devils leading 2-0.
The Devils outshot the Blues 9-6 in the period.
The Blues got a big break, courtesy of the linesmen at
7:41 of the third period. Chris Pronger of the Blues passed the puck
from behind the blue line to Doug Weight - who was just in front of the
Devils blue line. Weight beat Brodeur with a blast, but the
pass from Pronger was a clear two-line pass. The goal should
never have been allowed, but the linesman did not call the two-line pass.
The game ended with the Devils winning the game by a score
of 2-1. St. Louis outshot the Devils 16-7 in the third period and
28-24 in the game.
