The New Jersey Devils shutout the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-0
at home on Sunday, April 21, 2002. The win cuts the Hurricanes lead
in the series to 2 games to 1.
Brian Gionta beat Arturs Irbe at 7:48 of the first period,
just 8 seconds after a Devils power-play had expired to give the Devils a
1-0 lead. Gionta's 1st career NHL playoff goal was assisted by Bobby Holik
and Scott Niedermayer.
Brian Rafalski got his first goal of the playoffs at 9:25 of
the first period, on the power-play. Petr Sykora and Patrik Elias
assisted on Rafalski's goal.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Hurricanes,
2-0. The Devils outshot the Hurricanes, 11-3 in the period.
Bobby Holik beat Irbe just 58 seconds into the second period,
on the power-play to give the Devils a 3-0 lead. Holik's 2nd goal
of the playoffs was assisted by Patrik Elias.
Irbe was pulled from the Carolina net after Holik's goal and
was replaced by Kevin Weekes. The crowd at the Continental Airlines
Arena loudly cheered "Ir-Bay" at this point and several other times during
the game, to let him know how they felt.
Brian Rafalski beat Kevin Weekes with a nice shot at 2:17 of
the second period, on the power-play. Rafaski's 2nd goal of the
playoffs (and of the game) was assisted by Joe Nieuwendyk and Patrik
Gionta put the puck past Weekes at 17:04 of the second period,
but the goal was disallowed, because it was hit in with a high stick.
The second period ended with the Devils leading the Hurricanes,
4-0. The Devils outshot the Hurricanes, 17-7 in the second period.
There was no scoring, but plenty of action in the third period.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 4-0.
The Devils outshot the Hurricanes 35-16 and outhit them 38-18 in the
game. The Hurricanes won 50.7% of the faceoffs in the game.
Carolina blocked 64 shots in the first two games, but only managed to block
12 in this game.
This shutout is the 13th career playoff shutout for Brodeur,
and his third against the Hurricanes.
Elias had 3 points in the game. The Devils were 3 for
7 on the power-play in the game, after scoring only 1 in 10 chances through
the first two games of the series.
The "three stars" of the game were Patrik Elias(1), Brian
Rafalski(2), and Brian Gionta(3).
Stephane Richer returned to the lineup for the Devils and
Turner Stevenson took part in the Devils warmup skate (1/2 hour prior to the
start of the game), but was not in the lineup.
Christian Berglund took a high stick from Aaron Ward and
10 stictches were required to close the gash over his left eye.
Sergei Nemchinov, Andreas Salomonsson, and Valeri Kamensky
were healthy scratches for the Devils.
The attendance for the game was 17,004 (capacity 19,040).
