April 23, 2002Game 4: Devils Chase Irbe Again, Win 3-1, Series Tied
The New Jersey Devils defeated the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-1,
at home on Tuesday, April 23, 2002. The win ties the series at 2
Bobby Holik gave the Devils an early lead at 1:16 of the
first period, by beating Arturs Irbe with a nice shot. Holik's
3rd goal of the playoffs was assisted by Sergei Brylin.
Brian Gionta got his second goal of the playoffs at 17:31
of the first period. Gionta's goal was shorthanded and unassisted.
The first period ended with the Devils leading the Hurricanes,
2-0. The Devils outshot the Hurricanes, 8-5 in the period.
For the second game in a row, Arturs Irbe was removed from
the Hurricanes net in favor of Kevin Weekes. When the second period
started, Weekes was in net for the Hurricanes. Irbe has only played
for 41 minutes the past two games - and let up 5 goals (on 20 shots) in that
There was no scoring in the second period. The Devils
outshot the Hurricanes, 11-10 in the period.
Brian Rafalski scored on the power-play at 6:23 of the third
period to give the Devils a 3-0 lead. Rafalski's 3rd goal of the
playoffs was assisted by Patrik Elias and Brian Gionta.
Aaron Ward destroyed Brodeur's shutout streak by scoring with
just 2:37 remaining in the game.
The game ended with the Devils winning, 3-1. The
Hurricanes outshot the Devils 9-3 in the third period and 24-22 in the
Andrei Zyuzin, Sergei Nemchinov, and Valeri Kamensky were
