September 22, 2002 Devils vs Penguins Pre-Season Game
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the New Jersey
Devils, 4-3 on Sunday, September 22, 2002 in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
Joe Hulbig got the Devils on the board at 4:29 of the
first period on the power-play. Tverdovsky had blasted a shot that
was blocked, but Hulbig pounced on the rebound and put the puck
past Caron. Adrian Foster also assisted on Hulbig's first
goal of the pre-season.
Ross Lupaschuk tied the game at 13:50, by beating
Schwab on the power-play.
Randy Robataille beat Schwab at 17:23 of the first
period to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead.
Alexandre Daigle scored just 10 seconds later to increase
the Penguins lead to 3-1.
The first period ended with the Penguins leading the
Devils 3-1. The Pens also outshot the Devils 15-13 in the
period.
John Madden cut the Penguins lead to 3-2 at 10:33 of
the second period on the power-play. Christian Berglund and
Oleg Tverdovsky assisted on the goal.
Brooks Orpik and Dave Roche were involved in a slight
altercation, but no good punches thrown.
The second period ended with the Penguins leading the
Devils, 3-2. The Devils outshot the Penguins 12-4 in the
period.
Ari Ahonen started the third period in net for the
Devils.
Alexander Daigle got his second goal of the game at
4:02 of the third period. The power-play goal gave the Penguins a
4-2 lead.
Oleg Tverdovsky got the Devils within one goal at 17:39
of the third period. Brian Gionta assisted on the goal.
The game ended with the Penguins winning the game,
4-3. New Jersey outshot Pittsburgh 37-30 in the game.
Sebastien Caron was in net for the Penguins for the
majority of the game. He left the game (Hedberg stood in for
him) briefly with an apparent minor hand injury, but did finish the
game in net.
The Penguins were 2 for 8 and the Devils were 2 for 10
on the power-play. The announced attendance for the game was
7,017.
